TUSD Launches Electric Bus Pilot Program with Grants

Staff Report / Tucsonlocal.org

Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) has officially launched an electric bus pilot program, backed by over $6 million in grants and rebates. The program includes the introduction of 10 electric school buses along with the necessary infrastructure such as EV chargers and charging stations to support this initiative.

Funding for this project has come from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and rebates from Tucson Electric Power. In addition, TUSD has partnered with Schneider Electric to bring this program to fruition.

On a related note, TUSD recently held a press conference where nearly $4 million in federal funding for zero-emission electric buses was highlighted. The event featured support from Tucson Electric Power, the EPA, and City of Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, who emphasized the importance of healthier transportation options and potential cost savings associated with this shift.

During the conference, students from John B. Wright Elementary School also participated, sharing their research and enthusiasm for alternative energy and its implications for the future.
