Tucson Officer Killed in Traffic Collision
On December 9, 1998, Officer Juan N. Cruz of the Arizona Department of Public Safety was fatally injured while on duty in Tucson, Arizona. Officer Cruz, who had served with the department for 17 years, was positioned in his patrol vehicle as part of a team blocking a lane on Interstate 10 to investigate an earlier collision. During the investigation, a 21-year-old woman drove her vehicle into the scene and struck the rear of Officer Cruz’s vehicle. The collision resulted in fatal injuries to Officer Cruz. The driver later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received an 11-year jail sentence.
