Celebrate Sukkot: Joyful Festival of Booths!
Staff Report / Tucsonlocal.org
Sukkot, also known as the Festival of Booths, is a week-long Jewish holiday celebrated from sundown on October 16 to sundown on October 23 this year. During this time, participants celebrate the Israelite's escape from slavery in Egypt and the abundance of the fall harvest.
Sukkot is one of three pilgrimage festivals, alongside Pesach and Shavuot, during which people historically traveled to Jerusalem. To mark the occasion, families and friends spend time in a sukkah, or booth, and engage in the ritual of shaking the Lulav and Etrog, also known as the Four Species.
The Tucson Jewish Community Center (JCC) has set up a sukkah in the Jill Rosenzweig Memorial Sculpture Garden for community gatherings. For updated holiday hours, community members are encouraged to visit the Tucson JCC's website.
