Tucson JCC Celebrates Sukkot with Community Activities

Staff Report / Tucsonlocal.org

This week, the Tucson Jewish Community Center (JCC) celebrated Sukkot, a festival that honors the fall harvest and commemorates the Jewish exodus from Egypt. The celebration included community activities at the J's Sukkah, located in the Jill Rosenzweig Memorial Sculpture Garden.

Children in the Early Childhood Education program engaged in learning about Sukkot and created decorative adornments during their time in the Sukkah. Staff members met for a leadership team meeting held under the Sukkah, where they connected with one another and participated in traditional customs, including shaking the lulav and smelling the etrog.

As part of a fun tradition, children in the JCare afterschool program built edible Sukkahs using graham crackers, pretzels, M&M's, and parsley. In addition, teens involved in BBYO collaborated with elders at Handmaker Jewish Services for the Aging during the second Better Together program of the year. This initiative aims to enhance intergenerational connections within the Jewish community. The teens and elders exchanged digital introductions with peers in Moldova and created paper Sukkahs.

Over 30 participants attended the first part of the Aging + Social Connections discussion series, which focused on debunking aging myths and discussing the importance of independence. Upcoming sessions and a new Relationships + Health Education Series were also highlighted.

The JCC hosted Fall Parent Night for families of Taglit participants, featuring snacks, socializing, and updates regarding programming.

The Tucson JCC wishes the community a restful and joyous Shabbat.
